The United States Air Force Academy is a military school designed for the education of officer candidates for the United States Air Force, and is located just north of Colorado Springs, Colorado, in El Paso County. This is an elite federal air force academy that only accepts the best and brightest. The acceptance rate is 11.1%. Founded in 1954, the Air Force Academy is also known as the Fighting Falcons, which provides an insight into their mascot, which is the falcon. The motto of the Air Force Academy is “to educate, train, and inspire men and women to become officers of character, motivated to lead the United States Air Force in service to our nation.” In addition to the Air Force Academy motto, it has what are known as the four pillars of excellence, which are character development, and academic, athletic, and military training. Because of its location and its excellent reputation, the United States Air Force Academy is also one of the most popular tourist spots in Colorado. The Academy itself is open to the public daily from 8:00am to 6:00pm. The Barry Goldwater Air Force Academy Visitor Center is open from 9:00am to 5:00pm every day except the major holidays: Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day. The Visitor Center is named after Arizona Senator Barry M. Goldwater, because of his great support for the Air Force. It officially opened in June 1986. In the Visitor Center, people can find maps, exhibits, displays, and even a 14 minute video on the history of the Air Force and cadet life. Because this Air Force Academy is not a museum, but a real, working academy, visitors are only allowed in the following areas: several overlooks across the Academy, the Cadet Chapel, the Honor Court, Arnold Hall, the Cadet Field House, Falcon Athletic Center, Falcon Stadium, the Association of Graduates building, and the Visitor Center. Arnold Hall houses military and Academy exhibits, as well as a dining are and an auditorium. The Honor Court displays bronze statues and aircraft memorials from the various groups. The Field House serves an an indoor athletic field, ice rink, and a basketball court. Visitors are not allowed in the Terrazzo, the air field, or the housing areas. There is also hiking available for visitors in the area. The Falcon hiking trail is open during regular visiting hours.

The Air Force Academy is open to the public all year long. However, if you’re interested in seeing some of the officers in training, you should not go over general academic holidays. If you don’t want to make your entire trip about the Air Force Academy, the tourist city of Colorado Springs is just south of the Academy, and has some fantastic restaurants and entertainment for people of all ages. Summer and winter are some of the most popular tourist times in that area. If you want to avoid a large crowd of people, the spring and fall are excellent times to come to the Academy. While you’re at the Academy, make sure you stick around for lunch. That way you’ll be able to witness the Noon Meal Formation. This is a time when you can observe the cadet wing marching to lunch. It is scheduled for noon on Monday through Friday during the academic year. The Noon Meal Formation can be viewed from both the Honor Court wall and the wall surrounding the Cadet Chapel, which overlooks the Terrazzo, where the cadets will be.

Because the United States Air Force Academy is an active school, and a military institution, there are several precautions taken when permitting visitors on the property. All visitors must show a driver’s license and be ready to have their cars inspected. People who do not comply with these safety regulations will not be allowed on the Air Force base. Large bags and backpacks are not allowed in the Visitor Center, the trail between the Visitor Center and the Cadet Chapel, and the Cadet Chapel. Pets are also not allowed on the premise for safety reasons. The Air Force Academy is located in a higher altitude than most people are accustomed to. For this reason, it is important that visitors stay hydrated, because adjusting to a higher altitude can cause fluid loss. Visitors should also avoid overexerting themselves, as well as alcohol and tobacco. Eating a high-carb diet will also help you adjust to the altitude by providing you with extra energy to compensate for the high altitude.
